Transylvania & Romania moto tour
This is a single country tour incorporating 8 major regions, 3500 kilometers,
14 riding days on asphalt roads.
Most part it takes place in Transylvania, a historic region of Romania but
reaches the other two (Moldova and Valachia) also. The eight smaller regions
differ ethnically, geographically, as well as regarding the food, specific
drinks, and cultural heritage. We are talking about Dobrogea, near the Black
Sea and Danube Delta, Moldova, Maramures, Highlanders of Western
Carpathians, Wallachia, Saxon region of Transylvania, and the Szekler region
of Transylvania. These together result a tour, showing almost too much, an
usual tourist can take.
Day 1:
Bucuresti – Mahmudia 310 km
Heading towards the Black Sea and Danube Delta
Day2:
Mahmudia
A day to discover the Danube Delta (UNESCO world heritage of biosphere) and
Black Sea shore, its multi ethnic (Turks, Tatars, Macedonians, Bulgarians,
Ukrainians, Romanians) heritage and amazing water scenery.
Day 3:
Mahmudia – Covasna 320 km
Road leading us trough Dobrogea and southern Moldova's vine region, than on
some unbelievable mountain road will arrive to Covasna the city of 1000 mineral
water springs, most eastern corner of Szekler regoin.
Day 4:
Covasna – Sovata 200 km
A full day between the Szeklers (Hungarian speaking Romanians with unique
cultural heritage), and their amazing natural scenery, with crater lakes, salt
mountains, pine forests, trout filled mountain creeks and narrow windy roads.
Day 5:
Sovata – Targu Neamt 200 km
Riding some astonishing forest roads will reach the unbelievable Bicaz Canyon,
than the immense dam lake of Bicaz. By the evening will sleep at Moldova
monasteries at the monks.
Day 6:
Targu Neamt – Salistea 240 km
The fun continues on deep forest roads, shady mountain foothills towards the
mythical Maramures region, sleeping at a traditional, family owned guest house.
Day 7:
Maramures 200 km.
Monumental wooden gates, traditional small farms, pottery, wood carving, churches
made entirely of wood, hidden small villages, specific food and drinks. Of course
there is a happy cemetery also.
Day 8:
Salistea – Rimetea 200 km
Heading south to the unique Turda canyon and fascinating salt mine, than evening in
the village where all the houses are protected by UNESCO, Rimetea.
Day 9:
Rimetea – Rau de Mori 300 km
A morning spent in the unbelievable scenery of Western Carpathian's highlanders,
icy cave of Scarisoara, than ride up to Deva fort and visit the famous Hunedoara
castle.
Day 10:
Rau de Mori – Herculane 310 km.
If you were not overwhelmed so far by the scenery the Danube Canyon and the Iron
Gates will knock you down.
Day 11:
Herculane – Sibiu 360 km
Riding all day on the challenging roads of Transylvanian Alps, deep in the hearth of
them, than to Sibiu along the breath taking Olt narrows.
Day 12:
Sibiu – Brasov 200 km
Taking our time in Sibiu (cultural capital of Europe in 2007) and taste the Saxon
feeling, just topping this, with the old Saxon city of Sighisoara than Brasov.
Day 13:
Brasov – Balea Lac 200 km
Still on Saxon land, will visit Rasnov and Bran castle, Fagaras fort than start our
amazing way up on Trans-Fagaras high mountain road, will stop at the top (2100 m
high) and sleep near the glacier lake in the cottage belonged to dictator Ceausescu.
Day 14:
Bale Lac – Bucuresti 200 km
Continue our way down, near the huge dam lake of Vidraru (the bravest can try a
bungee jump of 166 m from the top of the dam) or just admire the rainbow on the
falling water. Admiring the Poienari ruins (the fort that really belonged to Vlad Tepes,
later called by a mistake, Dracula). Fast ride to Bucharest.
